How do you dispose of old backup tapes? Obviously, you follow your document retention policy. But what should that policy look like? Duration is definitely an issue; there are legal requirements for certain records, business uses, and other reasons to keep them a long time, as well as good reasons for deleting them as soon as possible (legal risks [including simply the cost of responding to discovery with way-old records], storage costs, etc.). There are also good reasons why different types of records should have different lengths of storage. There are other issues that your record retention policy should address, like encryption and other security.

Whey you do decide to dispose, what should you do specifically? Howard Marks at InfoWeek discusses some of your options. I'm not sure how useful that all is, but it is definitely something you should think about.
