HIPAA and the Virginia Tech shooting: Walter Olson of the Manhattan Institute, who also writes at the
OverLawyered blog, has an
article in the Times UK on how HIPAA, and medical record privacy issues generally, may have been an impediment to preventing the tragedy in Blacksburg last week. As I've noted here time and again, it is a hard, hard balancing act between privacy and proper use of medical information, and people who go overboard demanding absolute medical privacy unwittingly facilitate tragic events like this one, or at the least hamper those who might otherwise work to prevent them.
