HIPAA-compliant disclosures in an emergency: I think I posted this before but I'm not in a position to look right now. But even if I didn't here's a good tool to keep handy. It's a document from HHS that gives you a decision-making flow-chart for determining what disclosures you can make in the event of an emergency. It's worth printing out and making sure your privacy and security officers have it, at the least. Any employees tasked with responding to data requests in an emergency should have a copy handy as well. If you did your HIPAA security risk-assessment and compliance activities right, you will have a disaster recovery and operations plan; this pdf would be a good chart to have in the manual.
