NPI Contingency Plan: You may have seen the news yesterday that CMS has announced that it will not start punishing HIPAA covered entities for failing to fully implement the National Provider Identifier by May 23, as required by regulations. This is in step with others who have called for a delay in implementing the NPI. However, despite what Modern Healthcare implies (registration required, and recommended), CMS did not push back the May 23 implementation date. HIPAA covered entities are still required to get, use and share NPIs in every HIPAA transaction starting next month. If you don't, and you have a good reason for not doing so, you will be in violation of the regulations but won't be fined; however, if you don't use NPIs just because you think you're not required to meet the deadline, you'd better think again.
