HIPAA and Emergency Situations: The Office of Civil Rights, the enforcement agency for the HIPAA Privacy Rule, has recently published a tool to help covered entities determine when and how disclosures of PHI may be made in emergency situations. With hurricane season upon us and the memory of Katrina still fresh, this is some good information. Mainly, common sense would lead you to the same results, but common sense is uncommon where HIPAA is involved.
