National Provider Identifier marches forward: One of the technology-streamlining goals of HIPAA (remember what they refered to as "administrative simplification"?) is to eliminate multiple identifiers for participants in the industry, so that each provider would have a single identifying number, each payor would have a single identifying number, each recipient of healthcare would have a single identifying number, etc. While the individual identifying numbers might never be completed, the payor and provider numbers have moved forward. After May 23, providers can and should be starting the process, and there are three ways to do it. CMS hired Fox Systems to run the program, and you can get a number by applying online here, or you can print off the form from there and mail in a hard copy, or you can wait until the fall and let your employer, IPA, or other group or association that you're a member of get your number for you.

UPDATE: sorry, the link's not good right now. It should be after May 23, though. I'll check back. . . .
