I should have posted this days ago, but
HealthLeaders has a great article discussing how you can do research without getting authorizations. This may be particularly helpful where the research involves digging through the thousand-patient-file haystack looking for the needles, where the burden of getting authorizations from thousands of patients, whose information stands a very slim chance of being used, far outweighs the benefit.
