"Y2K on Steriods". That's the money quote in this article in the Puget Sound (Seattle) Business Journal (link requires free registration). The other good quote, in this story about how much Seattle-area healthcare entities are going to have to pay for HIPAA compliance, is this: "But the most difficult part of HIPAA lies not in the technical changes for electronic-data interchange, but in the privacy requirements."

Smaller providers won't likely spend so much on the technical requirements, like changing billing and coding software or making hugely expensive changes in hugely expensive "legacy" information systems. But they will be more greatly impacted by the privacy and, eventually, security requirements.

What's your status?
